JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Chris Aarhus, a sportswriter at The Jamestown Sun newspaper here, has been named the 2014 North Dakota Sportswriter of the Year, presented by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

The award was announced Thursday and is voted on annually by members of the state’s sports media.

“It’s very humbling to receive such a great honor,” Aarhus said. “There’s no better award than one given to you by your peers.”

Sun Sports Editor Dave Selvig said Aarhus certainly deserves the award.

“He’s one of the best sportswriters in the state,” Selvig said, “and has also enhanced the look of our section since coming to the Sun because of his page-design skills.”

Aarhus, a Sherwood, N.D., native, has been with the Jamestown Sun since May 2012. He had previously worked as a sportswriter at The Dickinson Press and as the sports editor at The Daily Republic in Mitchell, S.D., as well as the Minot Daily News.

Aarhus is the first winner of the award from the Sun since 2005, and the fifth recipient of the award by a Sun sports member since its inception in 1959.

Also nominated for the sportswriting award was Jeff Kolpack of The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald and Cindy Peterson, formerly of the Bismarck Tribune.

Voters also named Rod Kleinjan of KDIX Radio in Dickinson North Dakota’s 2014 Sportscaster of the Year.

The Sun, The Press and the Daily Republic are all owned by Forum Communications Co., which is a multimedia information company based in Fargo. FCC owns more than 35 newspapers, 40-plus websites, television and radio stations and commercial printing plants in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
